The Milwaukee Brewers farm system has been ranked near the bottom of the league over the past few seasons. They did miss on a few top draft picks such as Corey Ray and Tristen Lutz, but having players such as Brandon Woodruff, Corbin Burnes, Freddy Peralta, Keston Hiura, and others graduate from prospect status contributed to this decline. Recently, their top picks have shown promise, plus a few other surprise players, which has led to the Brew Crew climbing up the prospect ranking prior to the start of the 2023 season.
According to Baseball America’s rankings, the Brewers have the 13th ranked farm system prior to the start of the 2023 season.
Prior to the start of the 2022 season, Baseball America had the Brewers farm system ranked 25th overall. They were 28th in 2021, last in 2020, and 26th in 2019.
Players drafted by the Brewers that have contributed to this jump include Sal Frelick (2nd overall according to MLB Pipeline), Joey Wiemer (3rd), Brice Turang (4th), Garrett Mitchell (5th), Tyler Black (6th), Jacob Misiorowski (8th), and Eric Brown (9th).
International signees that currently have rising stock includes star prospect Jackson Chourio (1), catcher Jefferson Quero (7th), and outfielder Luis Lara (12th).
Prospects to join the team externally include pitcher Robert Gasser (10th) and Janson Junk (13th).
Depending upon how the 2023 season goes, Garrett Mitchell and Brice Turang could receive enough MLB playing time to graduate out of prospect status.
It’s possible that the Brewers could have more prospects blossom in 2023. A few to keep an eye on are Robert Moore and Jace Avina. Moore, drafted 72nd overall last year, has been playing well in Australia this Winter. Avina crushed 15 balls over the wall in just 64 games last year.
The Brewers will also likely continue to draft proven college players early in the draft. This has been their strategy over the past few seasons and it’s been paying dividends.
It is great to see the Brewers farm system get some recognition. We also may get to see quite a few of these players in the Major Leagues over the course of the next few seasons.
