Amid the disappointment of the Brewers shedding multiple key contributors this offseason, do-it-all prospect Jett Williams, acquired in the Freddy Peralta trade, offers a capsule of excitement. Listed at No. 51 in MLB’s prospect rankings, Williams has a real shot to crack the big-league roster by Opening Day. He can play infield, outfield, draw walks, steal bases, and hit for solid power. His combined skills and potential make him the Brewers’ “player to watch” in ESPN’s Spring Training primer for all 30 teams.
Williams offers well of promise as piece of Brewers’ future
Analyst Alden Gonzalez hit the nail on the head describing Williams’ appeal to the organization.
“Has there ever been a more quintessential Brewers player? Williams packs elite speed, power potential and excellent swing decisions into a 5-foot-7, 175-pound frame, and he can play anywhere in the middle of the field. The Brewers love guys like him.”
With Caleb Durbin now in Boston, Williams has a clear path to a starting job on the infield if only he takes it. He could either slide into Durbin’s spot at third or replace Joey Ortiz at shortstop with Ortiz shifting to the hot corner. Realistically, that might not take place right out of the gate – Williams’ debut may have to wait until a later date this season – but winning an Opening Day bid could certainly be possible with a strong spring.

The Brewers already know the Mets’ former top five prospect is full of potential.
“Williams, picked out of high school at No. 14 in 2022, spent 130 games in the Mets’ Double-A and Triple-A affiliates last season, slashing .261/.363/.465 with 17 homers and 34 steals. Brewers officials don’t know where he’ll play this season, but they’ll be keeping a close eye on him in camp.”
One thing worth noting, of course, is Williams’ woes following his Triple-A promotion last season. At the highest level of the Mets’ system, he hit just .209/.285/.433 in 34 games. That’s in contrast to an all-around excellent showing at Double-A, where Williams played short, second, and centerfield while posting an .868 OPS and 32 steals.
If he does break into the bigs out of camp, he’ll have to show enough to convince the Brewers he is ready for the jump despite struggling at Triple-A Syracuse for New York.
