Wisconsin was blanketed with sadness on Thursday, January 16, with the news of the passing of state sports legend Bob Uecker. Milwaukee Brewers star Christian Yelich is among them.
The legendary MLB star turned broadcaster passed away at the age of 90 after getting diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer in 2023.
“Today, we take on the heaviest of burdens. Today, we say goodbye to our beloved friend, Bob Uecker,” the Brewers said in a statement.
“Ueck was the light of the Brewers, the soundtrack of our summers, the laughter in our hearts, and his passing is a profound loss. He was the heart and soul of Wisconsin and a dear friend. Bob loved people; his presence warmed every room and he had a way of welcoming all of us into his world as if we were lifelong friends.”
Uecker is a one-time World Series champion who played for four teams from 1962 to 1967.
He did not play for the Brewers but he went back to his hometown after a short MLB career by becoming part of the club’s broadcast team. He carved his legend in the state since then.
Christian Yelich’s emotinoal tribute for Bob Uecker
Yelich, who is still recovering from an injury that abruptly ended his 2024 season, is among those who paid tribute to Uecker.
In a pinned Instagram post, the 2018 National League MVP posted videos and photos of them together accompanied by a touch caption.

He wrote:
“No words will really do you justice but I kind of think that’s how it should be. To say you were one of one is probably an understatement, the stories you could tell, the life you lived and the way you impacted people. I always cherished our time together and just being able to listen to you talk about your life and all you’d seen.”
He also recalled a powerful quote from the legendary broadcaster and said that it was a pleasure getting to know him.
“I remember you saying that no matter how much time you have it still never feels like enough and that seems pretty true today. You’d always thank me for my friendship but the truth of it is the pleasure was all mine. I’ll miss you my friend.”
