Brewers’ Camp Moves Give Hints to Opening Day Roster

The Milwaukee Brewers may have had a rough 2020, but their 2021 Spring Training has been fun to watch.  Many players are playing well, and Craig Counsell is going to have some tough decisions when determining his Opening Day Roster.  However, the Brewers made some moves over the weekend that may bring clarity to who will be with the team and who will start in the minors.

Players Optioned to Triple A Nashville

The following players were optioned to Triple-A Nashville today: C Mario Feliciano, OF Corey Ray, RHP Alec Bettinger and RHP Dylan File.

The players optioned to Triple-A Nashville are not really that surprising.  Corey Ray, once a top prospect, is now looking to be a career minor league player, especially with the Brewers’ deep outfield.  Additionally, Alec Bettinger and Dylan File have a log jam of great relievers ahead of them on the Major League roster.

The most notable player optioned is catcher Mario Feliciano.  The Brewers, of course, have Manny Pina and Omar Narvaez set as their top two catcher.  However, Feliciano is a player to watch.  He once led Double-A in home runs and RBI and is projected to be a fierce power hitter once he is Major League ready.

Players Reassigned to Minor League Camp

The following players were reassigned to Minor League Camp today: OF Tristen Lutz, OF Garrett Mitchell, INF Brice Turang, LHP Clayton Andrews, RHP Jake Cousins, RHP Thomas Jankins, RHP Miguel Sánchez, LHP Ethan Small and LHP Quintin Torres-Costa.

    — Milwaukee Brewers (@Brewers) March 12, 2021

The players listed above will begin the year with other Brewers’ affiliated teams.  The most notable of these is Garrett Mitchell, the Brewers’ top prospect.  Mitchell has had a great Spring Training, hitting .500 with a home run.  Taken with the 20th overall pick in last year’s draft, Mitchell is turning heads with his solid hitting and exciting play.  It will not be long before he moves up in the Brewers’ system.

Ethan Small and Brice Turang, also top Brewers’ prospects, will continue their development, likely at Double-A Carolina.

    Two Notable Players Remain

Left-handed pitching prospect Aaron Ashby remains with the Big League team.  Ashby has faced 13 batters so far this spring, and has struck out seven of them.  While he has to out-perform some established Major League relievers to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster, he seems to have surpassed Ethan Small as the pitcher who is most Major League-ready.

Travis Shaw was signed by the Brewers to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.  Monday, March 15, marks the day that he can choose to opt out of the contract if he wanted to pursue a Major League deal elsewhere.  However, Shaw is playing very well this spring and looks to be a candidate to even start on Opening Day.
