The 1969 sports calendar in Wisconsin was full. The Bucks in late 1968 and into 1969 were playing their first season in the NBA. The Seattle Pilots, which became the Milwaukee Brewers in 1970, saw their first year as a franchise played out west in 1969. And the Green Bay Packers were just two years removed from back-to-back Super Bowl wins.
So, here’s the question, with 1969 as the starting point, which of the Wisconsin major league teams… the Brewers, Bucks and Packers… have had the most winning seasons over the past 54 years?
Will Pack finish with a winning or losing season in 2022?
Unfortunately, with three weeks left in the 2022 NFL season, we can’t offer a definitive answer to that question. Why? If the Packers win all three of their remaining games this season, they will finish 9-8, a winning season. It would be their 30th winning season since 1969.
If, however, they lose one of the three remaining games, they would finish the ’22 campaign under .500. That would give them 29 winning seasons since 1969… the same number as the Milwaukee Bucks.
Here’s a snapshot look at the numbers for the Brewers, Bucks, Packers.
Winning seasons for Brewers, Bucks, Packers since 1969
Seasons above .500
29-MilwaukeeBucks
29-Green Bay Packers (2022 season to be determined)
20-Milwaukee Brewers.
In addition to these seasons above .500, each of the franchises have seen a few seasons where they played exactly .500. The Packers top that list with six seasons at .500, followed by the Bucks with three and the Brewers with two.
Looking back at the past 54 seasons, there have been only four years where the Brewers, Bucks and Packers each were above .500. The first year was in 1978. Just a few years later, in 1982, the three teams were each above .500 again.
It wasn’t until 2019 that the three teams had another season where they were each above .500. Two years later, in 2021, the teams each again finished above .500. If the Packers can win out in the next three weeks, it will mean another year with each team above .500. The Bucks finished the 2022 season 51-31 (.622) while the Brewers ended the 2022 season at 86-76 (.531).
A 9-8 finish (.529) in 2022 for the Packers would give them their 30th winning season and bragging rights over the Bucks and Brewers. It would also mean that the three teams have each been above .500 in three of the last four years.
Years when the three teams were all under .500
One final note: The three teams, Brewers, Bucks, Packers, were each under .500 three times since 1969. It happened in 1975, 1976 and 1977.
