After an electric start to the year, the then relatively unknown Trevor Gott looked like he might just be the next big reliever in Major League Baseball. So what happened between then and his 4.14 ERA at the end of the season? We’ll unpack the course of his season here in the latest installment of 2022 season report cards.
2022 Season Grade: B-
When looking at Trevor Gott, it’s important to keep recency bias in check. October was his worst month of the season by far. He gave up some influential runs in key games during the Crew’s playoff push. He earned two losses with an ERA of 7.36 for the month over three games as the Brewers’ season and postseason dreams came to an end. However, the rest of his season was much better that the ending that left a bitter taste in many fans’ mouths.
No one saw the Brewers’ new pitcher coming when he took the mound by storm back in April. He was signed in free agency prior to the 2022 season, but the addition didn’t make any waves. Next thing we knew, Gott was lighting it up; he started the season with five scoreless appearances before finally giving up two runs in his sixth outing. He lived up to his exciting start for much of the early end of the season, becoming a reliable middle inning reliever.
Consistency proved to be Trevor Gott’s weakness. When he was good (the months of April, May, August, and September), he was locked in. Conversely, when he had one off day, he had a stretch of them. In Gott’s defense, he served two stints on the injured list and on subsequent rehab assignments in June and August. Health was one of the Brewers’ overall struggles this season, and Trevor Gott was no exception.
Moving Forward
Gott is tied to the Brewers for two more seasons and becomes a free agent after 2024 season. The 30-year-old will make roughly $1.4 million this season. If he can find his groove again next season (and stay there), he should be a steady option to eat up middle innings. Especially considering how unsure fans were about Gott’s potential coming into this season, his performance was overall a success.
