MLB Pipeline is currently updating their 2023 top 100 prospect rankings list. The full list will be available on January 26. As a teaser, they released their top 10 prospect rankings for the outfielders. Two Milwaukee Brewers players landed inside the top 10. Those players are Jackson Chourio and Sal Frelick.
Jackson Chourio – 3rd Ranked OF Prospect Heading Into The 2023 Season
Most Brewer fans and prospect followers know the name Jackson Chourio by now. The 18 year old out of Venezuela put together a monster season during his first full minor league season last year. Overall he hit .288/.342/.538 with 20 home runs and 75 RBI. He dominated at both the Low-A and High-A levels last year before being promoted to Double-A at the end of the season.
The two players who are ranked higher than him on MLB Pipeline’s top 10 OF prospect list are Corbin Carroll and Jordan Walker. Carroll plays for the Diamondbacks and made his MLB debut last season. He has perhaps the best blend of hitting ability and speed. Walker plays for the Cardinals and has massive power both at the plate and with his throwing arm.
Sal Frelick – 8th Ranked OF Prospect Heading Into The 2023 Season
Frelick has similar hitting traits to Corbin Carroll in that they are both contact orientated players who have a ton of speed. Carroll has the advantage in regards to power, but that’s not to say that Frelick won’t show more in regards to that front this year. In 2022, Frelick hit 11 home runs, 28 doubles, and six triples.
One thing Frelick could look to improve upon next year is barreling baseballs. According to Fangraphs, 29% of his batted balls were hard hits and he had an average exit velocity of 85 MPH. The MLB average for hard hits last year was 35.8% and the average exit velocity was 88.4 MPH. With his speed, he was able to turn some of his weaker hits into base hits.
Both Chourio and Frelick are exciting outfield prospects in the Brewers organization. Hopefully they can continue to play well, develop, and we see them in the Major Leagues in the near future. It’s possible that both make their MLB debuts as soon as 2023.
