Brett Favre breaks his silence in the Mississippi welfare case, blaming the media for smearing his name
Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has been in the news a lot recently and it isn’t for a good reason.
Favre’s name has come up in involvement in a welfare investigation in Mississippi. Reports state that Favre played a role by taking money from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds and giving some to his alma mater, Southern Mississippi.
The university received $5M of that TANF money with some going to USM’s Athletic Foundation. The university built a volleyball facility and Wellness Center on campus. There have been no criminal charges against Favre. But now, he’s ready to publically speak on the matter but he’s blaming the media for ‘smearing’ his name:
“I have been unjustly smeared in the media,” Favre said in the statement. “I have done nothing wrong, and it is past time to set the record straight.
“No one ever told me, and I did not know, that funds designated for welfare recipients were going to the University or me. I tried to help my alma mater USM [University of Southern Mississippi], a public Mississippi state university, raise funds for a wellness center. My goal was and always will be to improve the athletic facilities at my university.”
Furthermore, in addition to the money that Southern Miss received, Favre received $1.1M. The money came from the TANF funds for speeches that Favre never even made.
This isn’t a good look on the former Packers legend, whether we want to believe him or not. And things could get uglier as the process plays out.
