The Packers wet out and finally decided to add a weapon on offense during free agency, Devin Funchess. One of the teams indisputable needs going into next season, but not a flashy move. On a day were the Packers missed out on Robby Anderson, who many fans wanted, the team went and added the big 26 year old target. Funchess spent four seasons in Carolina where his best years came in 2017 and 2018. In 2019 he signed with the Colts but only appeared in one game after breaking his clavicle.
Stats
In his five years Funchess has appeared in 62 games and started in 41.
- 164 Catches
- 21 Touchdowns
- 2,265 Yards
- 13.8 Yards per reception
Funchess hasn’t put up great numbers in his career but has potential. He’s never been a great receiver but should be a good depth addition at the least. The 26 year old should be playing with something to prove in 2020 after missing all of last season. At 6′ 4″ 228 lbs he could possibly be a contributer as a bgger target for Aaron Rodgers. Funchess will have to prove himself to see the field. He’s gonna be competing for the number two spot against guys like Allen Lazard, who showed flashes in 2019, and any rookies the packers decide to draft in April.
Grading the Move
Similar to the other deal the Packers have made this off season Fuchess is another low risk signing. The Packers probably hope for him to contribute with a chip on his shoulder and possibly pan out to be the second guy along Davante Adams. The move however does not make the team any significantly better.
Grade: C +
As Always
Let me know what you think of the signing. Do you think Funchess can elivate to WR2 status? Should the Packers have gone another direction?
