The Green Bay Packers will attempt to make a final push to the playoffs starting on MNF vs. the Rams. Every one of their final four remaining games is a must-win. Sitting at 5-8, the Packers have to leapfrog a few teams to secure that seventh seed. That means fielding the best team possible week in and week out. Today the Packers released a wide receiver who hasn’t been able to contribute in the way they originally hoped. Sammy Watkins, Packers veteran, was officially released today.
Sammy Watkins Released by Packers ahead of MNF

The Packers are releasing the veteran receiver, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported on Monday. Watkins will head to waivers following his release. Sammy Watkins joined the Packers with the goal of becoming a trusted target for Aaron Rodgers. He joined during a season when Green Bay was looking for someone to step up at the position. Instead, he caught just 13 passes for 206 yards in nine games played. Watkins missed a month’s worth of action due to a hamstring injury and played a combined total of only 11 snaps between Weeks 12 and 13. Those were the last two games in which he participated this season.
The emergence of Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs this season certainly made this decision to release Sammy Watkins easier for the Packers. In this Rams-Packers MNF matchup, Green Bay will finally get to see both of these rookies on the field at the same time. Expectations are high, even though they are just rookies.
