Elgton Jenkins Being Extended Was a Priority
There was some speculation among Packers fans on social media on what kind of extension the Packers would give to Jenkins. As a former second-round pick, Jenkins is not eligible for a fifth-year option. Thus the Packers faced the possibility of losing him to free agency after the year was over.
A major question, though, was would Jenkins accept a offensive guard contract. Some argued he would expect to be paid like a tackle. Offensive tackles make considerably more money, and Jenkins has played tackle a great deal during his time with the Packers. It appears, however, that the Packers were able to convince him to sign an extension as a guard, but making him one of the highest-paid guards in the NFL.
Quality offensive linemen do not grow on trees, and Jenkins is among the NFL’s best. Now the Packers will have David Bakhtiari and Jenkins guarding Aaron Rodgers’ blindside for the foreseeable future. As Jenkins as progressed in the season, he has been stronger and stronger coming back from a torn ACL last season. Despite the slow start, Jenkins was named as an alternate to the Pro Bowl, a testament to his sheer talent.
Regardless of the questions surrounding the Packers, a 2023 season with a fully healthy Bakhtiari and Jenkins is something fans should be very excited about.
