Per Bob Nightengale the union offered the MLB an option of removing the qualifying offer for free agency this year, and if no agreement reached by Nov. 15, the qualifying offer returns. It was rejected by MLB. The union’s exact proposal: ‘Remove draft pick compensation. The parties have until Nov. 15 to agree to an international draft If no agreement, then draft pick compensation comes back after 2022-23 offseason and revert back to current international amateur system.’
The International Draft Remains a Point of Focus:
The union rejected all three options on the international draft that were proposed:
MLB has scheduled a call with their 30 owners to discuss the next steps in negotiations.
The two sides are quite close on core economic issues, but they've each dug in on the international draft. MLB willing to eliminate draft pick compensation (qualifying offers) for the draft.— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) March 9, 2022
That conversation did not end well and resulted in the postponement of yet another week in the MLB season.
The Worst may be yet to come:
If negotiations weren't ugly before, just wait now that two weeks of games have been canceled, with MLB saying those games will not be made up and the players will not be paid for games missed.
