After failing to make the postseason in 2022, David Stearns has stepped down from his role as President of Baseball Operations with the Milwaukee Brewers. David Stearns has been with the Brewers since 2015 when he was hired as the general manager until 2020 when he was promoted to President of Baseball Operations. Current GM Matt Arnold will take over the position.

In 2021, fans heralded Stearns for making in-season moves to add Willy Adames and Rowdy Tellez. This year, fans criticized him for moving Josh Hader while the team was in a position to make the postseason. David Stearns discussed the move in a news release by the Brewers.
“This is not an easy decision for me and is something I have been wrestling with for a long time,” said Stearns. “Mark Attanasio and I have had an open dialogue and we both knew this day could eventually come. It has been a priority for both of us that any transition would take place while the organization is in a healthy position with solid leadership and a talented roster going forward. That is certainly the case today.”
Stearns went on to discuss being a resource to Matt Arnold as the team moves forward with the transition. Under David Stearns and Arnold, the Brewers have made the post-season four of the last five seasons. Stearns was responsible for putting together the 2018 NLCS team. He acquired Christian Yelich in the previous offseason who went on to win NL MVP. Stearns also supported Craig Counsell as the manager when he was hired.
Owner Mark Attanasio’s Thoughts on David Stearns Leaving Brewers
Mark Attanasio purchased the team in 2004 and brought David Stearns to the Brewers organization in 2015. Matt Arnold also joined the organization in 2015 and will take over for Stearns. Attanasio discussed the move in the Brewers’ news release.
“Over the last seven years, David has not only led our baseball operations at a high level, but he has also become a good friend,” said Attanasio. “Our discussions about his long-term plans have always been open and candid, and while I am disappointed that David is stepping down, I am grateful to David and know he has a very bright future.”
What’s Next for Matt Arnold
The Brewers have made this move with the timing to allow Matt Arnold to have control over the Brewers’ offseason. After failing to make the postseason under David Stearns, the Brewers will have many important decisions to make, and Arnold will lead the charge.
“We have a dedicated staff that has identified and developed talent at both the amateur and professional levels. This has served us well over the years and will allow for a seamless transition,” Arnold said.
“Milwaukee and Wisconsin are home to our family and home to fans who consistently demonstrate their passion for the Brewers,” Arnold continued. “I embrace the opportunity to continue working toward our goal – winning a World Series.”
There is a scheduled press conference at 10 a.m with David Stearns and Arnold for Brewers reporters and fans.
