The Milwaukee Brewers are expected to call up Ethan Small, their top pitching prospect. The news comes in a report by MLB insider Jeff Passan on Sunday afternoon.

Left-hander Ethan Small is being called up by the Milwaukee Brewers, sources tell ESPN. Small, 25, had a 1.88 ERA at AAA this year and since being drafted in 2019 has a 1.78 ERA and 177 strikeouts in 136.2 innings. Could be very important this year with Freddy Peralta’s injury.

This move comes as a delayed response to Freddy Peralta’s injury. With Peralta likely out until August, it was clear that the Brewers would begin to consider giving one of their top prospects a shot. Aaron Ashby is already being announced as a starter for the first half of the Brewers doubleheader versus the Chicago Cubs. This call-up could signal that Small is in line for his major league debut against the Cubs.

Ethan Small was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 28th overall pick in the first round of the 2019 MLB draft. In his senior season at Mississippi State, Small went 10–2 with a 1.93 ERA in 18 starts. He struck out 176 batters in 107 innings and was named the SEC Pitcher of the Year. Additionally, he won the 2019 National Pitcher of the Year Award.

He has found a lot of success in the Brewers organization in the early parts of his career. For example, Small has totaled 177 strikeouts and has a 1.78 ERA since 2019. What the Brewers like most about Small is that he is a dominating left-handed pitcher who, along with Ashby, will complement the dominating right-handed arms of Corbin Burnes and Brandon Woodruff.

The Brewers haven’t officially announced the move on their social media platforms. However, according to sources, this move is expected to occur within the next day or two. Due to the lack of official announcement, it is not clear whether there are any corresponding moves to Small’s call-up.
