Rich Bisaccia will have a new role on Packers coaching staff
The Green Bay Packers coaching staff has been finalized for the 2023 season. The Packers had a big question this offseason about the future status of special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia which has finally been resolved. Bisaccia’s special teams were essential for the Packers’ late-season surge with return man Keisean Nixon.
According to a statement by the Packers Friday afternoon, the Packers gave Bisaccia a promotion for next season and made a few other hires:
“The Green Bay Packers have promoted Rich Bisaccia to assistant head coach/special teams coordinator, hired Greg Williams as passing game coordinator (defense), promoted Ryan Downard to defensive backs coach, promoted Jason Rebrovich to pass rush specialist and hired Tim Lester as senior analyst, Rob Grosso as an offensive quality control coach and Kyle Wilber as special teams quality control coach. Head Coach Matt LaFleur made the announcements on Friday.”
Bisaccia was considered for a head coaching job
Bisaccia is considered to be one of the best coordinators in the NFL. He was regarded as a finalist for the Indianapolis Colts head coach vacancy this offseason. (The Colts eventually hired Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as their next head coach.) Bisaccia has over 20 years of experience as a special teams coordinator in the NFL.
Bisaccia was hired as the Packers’ special teams coordinator for the 2022 season. According to Rick Gosselin’s special teams rankings, the Packers were ranked 22nd for special teams last season. Much of the Packers’ struggles on special teams had to do with Amari Rodgers. The Packers’ special teams unit was much better after he was cut. And their late-season success earned Bisaccia a promotion to assistant head coach. That title could help him land a head coaching job next offseason.
The Packers hired a defensive passing game coordinator
The Packers lost their defensive passing game coordinator Jerry Gray this offseason. He accepted a coaching job with the Atlanta Falcons as an assistant head coach. The Packers announced they hired Greg Williams as Gray’s replacement for next season.
Here’s a profile by WSH Media on Gray.
