    Baseball Hall of Fame announces finalists for Contemporary Baseball Era ballot; seven of eight played against the Brewers

    The Baseball Hall of Fame on Monday announced the eight finalists for the 2023 Contemporary Baseball Era Hall of Fame ballot. The Contemporary Baseball Era considers players from 1980 or later.

    A 16-person committee will vote on this group in December. A player must receive 75% (12 of 16) of the vote to be selected. A committee member can choose only three of the eight for their ballot.

    2023 Contemporary Baseball Era finalists

    The eight on this year’s ballot: Albert Belle, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Don Mattingly, Fred McGriff, Dale Murphy, Rafael Palmeiro, and Curt Schilling. Seven of the eight played against the Milwaukee Brewers in their career; the lone player that did not was Dale Murphy.

    Here is a summary of each player’s credentials. Also included are some stats when they played against the Brewers in their career.

    Belle, Bonds, Clemens and Mattingly

    Albert Belle (1989-2000) — A five-time All-Star, five-time Silver Slugger. Played for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, and Baltimore Orioles. Versus the Brewers: 86 games, 26 home runs, 77 RBIs and a .337 batting average

    Barry Bonds (1986-2007) — Seven-time MVP, 14-time All-Star, eight-time Gold Glover, 12-time Silver Slugger, two-time batting title winner. Played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants. Versus the Brewers: 62 games, 22 home runs, 61 RBIs, .359 batting average.

    Roger Clemens (1984-2007) — MVP, seven-time Cy Young, 11-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion, seven-time ERA title winner, All-Star Game MVP. Played for the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros. Versus the Brewers: 40 games, 19-12 record, 2.25 ERA.

    Don Mattingly (1982-1995) — MVP, six-time All-Star, nine-time Gold Glover, three-time Silver Slugger, batting title winner. Played for the New York Yankees. Versus the Brewers: 141 games, 10 home runs, 75 RBIs, .286 batting average.

    McGriff, Murphy, Palmeiro and Schilling

    Fred McGriff (1986-2004) — Five-time All-Star, three-time Silver Slugger, World Series champion. Played for the Toronto Blue Jays, San Diego Padres, Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Chicago Cubs, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Versus the Brewers: 73 games, 11 home runs, 35 RBIs, .2131 batting average.

    Dale Murphy (1976-1993) — Two-time MVP, seven-time All-Star, five-time Gold Glover, four-time Silver Slugger. Played for the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, and Colorado Rockies. Versus the Brewers: Never played against the Brewers.

    Rafael Palmeiro (1986-2005) — Four-time All-Star, three-time Gold Glover, two-time Silver Slugger. Played for the Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, and Baltimore Orioles. Versus the Brewers: 103 games, 15 home runs, 59 RBIs, .290 batting average.

    Curt Schilling (1988-2007) — A six-time All-Star, three-time World Series champion, World Series MVP, NLCS MVP. Played for the Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Boston Red Sox. Versus the Brewers: 10 games, 4-4 record. 3.00 ERA.
