The Wisconsin Badgers men’s hockey team traveled to University Park this weekend to take on the #10 ranked Penn State team. The Nittany Lions rolled through the Badgers, 6-1, in the first game on Friday night after scoring three goals in the first and second periods. Penn State carried the momentum with them throughout the game, but hopefully Wisconsin can shift it tonight with a win.
Badgers Men’s Hockey Struggled to Control Possession in Loss
The story of the game was puck control and Penn State managed to keep that in their favor. In the first period, the Nittany Lions out-shot the Badgers 17-5 as they swarmed the goal. Penn State kept making chances for themselves in the first period and it paid off with two quick goals. The first goal scored came 14 seconds into the game by Danny Dzhaniyev to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead. Their second goal came on a power play following a two minute tripping minor from Tyson Jugnauth.
The Badgers men’s hockey team started the second period down 3-0 following a pair of goals from Ture Linden. Penn State came out firing in the second period as well with Tyler Gratton opening the scoring for the Nittany Lions. With the score at 4-0, the Nittany Lions packed on another two second period goals to bring the score to 6-0 before entering play in the third period. The Badgers fought hard in the second, with 12 shots and two near misses off of the bar.

Penn State opened the third period by giving the Badgers a power play following a slashing minor. The Badgers men’s hockey team responded with a quick power play goal by Brock Caufield 39 seconds into the power play. Carson Bantle and Corson Ceulemans recorded the assist on the goal to bring the score to 6-1 with nine minutes left in regulation. Unfortunately, the Badgers were not able to pull off the comeback against the Penn State Nittany Lions as they dropped the first game of the series.
