A Badgers insider predicts Wisconsin quarterback battle winner
The Wisconsin Badgers will have an embarrassment of riches in their quarterback room next year. A few weeks after 2022 starting quarterback Graham Mertz hit the transfer portal, the Badgers saw two quarterbacks transfer to Madison. The Badgers added Nick Evers from Oklahoma and Tanner Mordecai from SMU. A Badgers insider predicted the winner for the 2023 Wisconsin quarterback battle.
Evers and Mordecai should come into a quarterback room that will have Chase Wolf returning. Wolf had an up-and-down performance in the Badgers’ win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Those three quarterbacks will be battling it out this spring for who will be named the starter next season in Phil Longo’s offense.
Badgers insider Jesse Temple with The Athletic came up with a projected offensive depth chart for next season. Temple thinks the more experienced Mordecai will get the nod over Evers to start 2023:
Mordecai entered the transfer portal Thursday and announced his commitment to Wisconsin on Friday. His addition represents a huge for pickup Wisconsin, giving it an experienced quarterback with one year of eligibility remaining who can immediately start for a season before making way for some of the team’s younger talent. In two seasons at SMU, he threw for 7,152 yards with 72 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.
This isn’t a surprise the upperclassman would win the Wisconsin quarterback battle. Mordecai should be ripe to start in Wisconsin next fall. He racked up impressive numbers at SMU. This should give Evers a chance to learn behind a more experienced quarterback, so he will be ready to lead the offense in 2024. The Badgers have a much better quarterback situation just a month after they hired Luke Fickell.
