As we continue to looking into the 2022 Wisconsin Badgers, we’ve already looked and the biggest questions surrounding the offense and defense. Next, we’ll take a look at the three strongest position groups. It may not be the sexy positions, but it’s groups Wisconsin prides itself in.
Running Back
Its hard to name a better duo at the running back position in the country than Braelon Allen and Chez Mellusi. Both have the ability to change the game and can be the bellcow when asked. It might take Mellusi some some from the season ending injury last season, but assuming both are healthy, this is a great 1-2 punch.
Issac Gurendo and Julius Davis are no slouches either. Gurendo is coming off a season ending injury as well. However, when healthy, he’s got the speed that can get past opposing defenses. Davis has the ability to get yards when needed and is more than capable serviceable backup.
Offensive Line
I’ve made it pretty clear, but I love this position group. This group has a great mix of veterans and young studs. Jack Nelson and Joe Tippmann are young and arguably the two best linemen on this roster. Tyler Beach returns for another season. Logan Brown is a veteran with experience, and Tanor Bortilini can play any position. There’s depth and there versatility the Badgers love.
Behind this presumed starting lineup also includes depth and talent. Michael Furtney and Cormac Sampson are veterans with a lot of experience. Nolan Rucci, Riley Mahlman, Dylan Barrett, and Trey Wedig are young studs who should see some playing time as well. This is an offensive line full of NFL talent.
Defensive Line
The biggest reason I think this position group is a strength is because Keeanu Benton returns. I thought Benton would go to the NFL so his return his huge for this team. The defensive line also includes Rodas Johnson, Isaiah Mullins, and James Thompson Jr. All three are upper classmen and should have good seasons as well.
This flaw I see with this group however is depth. There isn’t much behind this unit. As a result, if injuries become an issue, this group could be very thin.
