In December the Milwaukee Brewers selected right-handed pitcher Gus Varland in the Rule-5 draft. He previously was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and had not played above the Double-A level. Despite knowing this, the Brewers selected him knowing that in order to retain him he has to remain on the active 26 man roster throughout the entire 2023 season. 30 year old Adrian Houser, who initially came to the Milwaukee Brewers through trade in 2015, has been used primarily in a starting pitcher role over each of the past three seasons. In 2019, he made 17 relief appearances, but injuries to other starting pitchers resulted in him drawing 18 starts. Looking ahead to 2023, it appears as if he is trending back towards a bullpen role. The 2023 World Baseball Classic quarterfinal game between Team USA and Venezuela was an instant classic. Runs were scored in five out of the nine innings and the lead was exchanged on three different occasions. Team USA pulled through in the end by a score of 9-7 that was capped off by a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning.
