In December the Milwaukee Brewers selected right-handed pitcher Gus Varland in the Rule-5 draft.  He previously was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and had not played above the Double-A level.  Despite knowing this, the Brewers selected him knowing that in order to retain him he has to remain on the active 26 man roster throughout the entire 2023 season.  If at any point he is removed, he has to be offered back to the Dodgers. Almost two years ago the Milwaukee Brewers traded shortstop Orlando Arcia to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for pitchers Chad Sobotka and Patrick Weigel.  With the Brew Crew, both pitchers elected free agency at the end of the 2021 season.  For Atlanta, Arcia has remained with the team and now reportedly will be the Braves opening day shortstop. A night after dramatically defeating Team Venezuela in the quarterfinal game, Team USA slugged their way past Cuba in their semifinal match up.  The final score ended up being 14-2 in which Team USA scored in every inning except for one (seventh inning).  They now will get a chance to defend their crown in the championship game on Tuesday night. 30 year old Adrian Houser, who initially came to the Milwaukee Brewers through trade in 2015, has been used primarily in a starting pitcher role over each of the past three seasons.  In 2019, he made 17 relief appearances, but injuries to other starting pitchers resulted in him drawing 18 starts.  Looking ahead to 2023, it appears as if he is trending back towards a bullpen role. In early January the Milwaukee Brewers signed former Missoula PaddleHead star outfielder Lamar Sparks to a Minor League contract.  The former fifth round 2017 draft pick found himself out of MiLB ball after multiple injuries and tragedies that included surgeries to address his labrum and shoulder as well as sustaining multiple facial fractures after being hit in the face with a 94 MPH fastball.  Today, during a spring training game, he hit a walk off for the Brew Crew. There are a lot of new players in the Brewers organization this year including in the pitching staff.  The bullpen has been re-tooled with a combination of internal prospects and external players acquired through either trade, waiver claims, and even a Rule-5 draft selection.   With all the new pitchers, Adam McCalvy recently asked Brewers catchers, “who has stood out the most during spring training”. The 2023 World Baseball Classic quarterfinal game between Team USA and Venezuela was an instant classic.  Runs were scored in five out of the nine innings and the lead was exchanged on three different occasions.  Team USA pulled through in the end by a score of 9-7 that was capped off by a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning.
