As week two of the high school football season is concluding, WSH’s game of the week was in Appleton. Cross town rivals Appleton East and Appleton West clashed on the East side of town. East came out victorious with a commanding 40-14 win. The vibe from the home fans felt it was quite the upset. It’s was a good win for a young Patriots team. Here is how the game went down.
Early Momentum Established
The Terrors attempted an onside kick to start the game. East was able to recover and get on the board with a 28 yard field goal.
The Patriots returned the favor by attempting an onside kick of their own. The Terrors, led by quarterback Ryder Hoffman, marched down the field quick through the air. In the blink of an eye, it was 7-3 Appleton West. It was the only lead West had the whole game.
The Rout Was On From There
This game was all Patriots from there. After a pitch from Patriot quarterback Chase Nelson to Anthony Burdett to make it 10-7, Appleton West began turning the ball over. After a turnover on downs, Burdett struck again from 61 yards to make it 24-7. A late 43 yard field goal made it 27-7 at the half. It was almost a flawless first half from the Patriots. It was a half full of turnovers from West.
The Second Half Was Very Similar
After West got the ball to start the second half, a three and out led to an early possession for East. Then a West penalty on fourth down resulted in a new set of downs for the Patriots. They responded by Nelson throwing another touchdown to Burdett. Burdett ended with three scores on the day.
Nelson did throw a pick six and the Terrors got it to 34-14. However, a late touchdown sealed the deal for Appleton East. East is a young team that took advantage of a ton of Terror mistakes. Both teams are now 1-1 on the season.
