Eric Lauer had a rough day at the office last night in his Brewers starting debut. Lauer was charged with the loss and his opponent, Trevor Bauer got the win. Lauer is 0-1 on the season with a 9.53 ERA, and Bauer is 2-0 with an astounding 0.93 ERA. Tonight’s matchup is Brett Anderson for the Brewers, and Anthony DeSclafani for the Reds.
Familiar face
Anthony DeSclafani is no stranger to the Brewers. He has pitched in 10 career games against the team, nine of them being starts. In 53 ⅓ innings pitched he has a 5.23 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. One Brewer that has done particularly well against DeSclafani is none other than Christian Yelich. The Brewers’ outfielder is 8-18 with two home runs and five RBIs versus the Reds’ right-hander.
What should we expect from DeSclafani?
DeSclafani is primarily a fastball thrower. Since his rookie year in 2014, his fastball velocity went from 92.5 mph to 95.1 mph. In his career he has thrown the pitch 58 percent of the time. His second most used pitch is the slider. DeSclafani’s pitching arsenal also includes a curveball and changeup, which aren’t used as frequently. In his last start, DeSclafani went five innings, allowing three hits and no runs.
Brett Anderson vs the Reds
The Brewers’ left-hander hasn’t pitched many games against the Reds in his career. Anderson has four games against the Reds with a 5.40 ERA. He’s looking to bounce back from his last start against the White Sox. It was a short start, only three innings pitched with five hits and two runs allowed. The start boosted his ERA to an even six. Given that Anderson is a left-hander, the Reds lineup has six right-handed batters plus a switch-hitter.
