Could Jordan Love replace an All-Pro QB next season?
The Green Bay Packers are set to have an exciting offseason. The Packers have a lot of positions to consider waiving, trading, and signing. They have a lot of elite talent and little cap space. The Packers could also be at a crossroads with their quarterback situation. One analyst thinks Jordan Love should replace an All-Pro quarterback next season.
Alex Ballentine with Bleacher Report wrote a piece recently about trades the Packers needed to consider this offseason. Ballentine thinks the Packers should entertain a trade with the Indianapolis Colts for Love. Love would replace All-Pro quarterback Matt Ryan. The Packers would get a third-round draft pick (A Washington Commanders pick the Colts received) in return:
So, if the Packers aren’t trading Rodgers and the veteran isn’t retiring, they would do well to help out their 2020 first-round pick and send him somewhere he can play.
The Indianapolis Colts could be a suitor. They’ve been on a merry-go-round of stopgap veteran quarterbacks since Andrew Luck’s retirement, from Philip Rivers to Carson Wentz to Matt Ryan. There was some success with Rivers, but they are finding it is not a sustainable model for finding a signal-caller.
Love would be a happy medium between finding another veteran stopgap and going the rookie route. The Utah State product has been in the NFL for three seasons now and has had the opportunity to learn behind Rodgers.
The asking price is low for Love
The Packers don’t need to have Love and Aaron Rodgers on the same team next season if they want to compete for a Super Bowl. They have too many holes to fill with little cap space to keep both of their full salaries on. However, a third-round pick is low for a quarterback Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst believes is an NFL starter. (The Commanders are likely a playoff team, so it’s a back-end third-round pick.)
It’s crucial that the Packers play Love if they’re mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. If Rodgers wants to stay with the Packers next season, he should want that too. Gutekunst might not need to see more tape on Love, but other NFL general managers will. Love needs a great dress rehearsal so the Packers can fetch a higher price for Love this offseason. So they can add more talent for Rodgers. That is if they intend on trading the former first-round pick.

If we trade Love, don’t we need to draft another QB high and piss off Rodgers once again?
