Just a few days ago Aaron Rodgers had a pretty telling comment about wide receiver Amari Rodgers. Understandably so, it drew a lot of attention from the media. Rodgers is entering his second season in Green Bay. His first was… Underwhelming to say the least. In 16 games played he finished with eight targets, four receptions, and 45 yards. Even after a promising pre-season, Amari Rodgers failed to see a single target in week one versus the Vikings. Today Amari Rodgers was asked about Aaron Rodgers comment, he had an interesting response.
Amari Rodgers Responds To Aaron Rodgers:
Rodgers reportedly hadn’t heard about the comment from his quarterback until one of the media members brought it up to him. Rather than getting upset or give a textbook non-answer about it, the 22-year-old offered up a mature, self-aware response.
“That’s just the truth. I haven’t earned his trust,” Amari Rodgers said, via Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal. “That’s my role — I’m the return guy right now. I’m just focused on trying to make a spark. And I feel like once I do make a spark in the return game — or continue to do that, like I did in the preseason — then more opportunities will open up for me.
“Me being my own biggest critic, I know what I need to work on even more. So, just knowing my flaws right now, I’m continuing to work on them, going against our defense every single day on the scout team. We have one of the best defenses in the league, and if I make plays versus them, then maybe he’ll see, ‘OK, he may be ready.’ And that may open up more opportunities, too. So just finding any way I can show them that I’m making steps in the right direction, that’s really what I’m focused on right now.”
While his response was exactly what you would want to hear, having your third round pick from just last year be in this position isn’t ideal. Green Bay has struggled with third round picks for a while. Dating back to 2012 the Packers have drafted the following players in the third round; Khyri Thornton, Richard Rodgers, Ty Montgomery, Kyler Fackrell, Montravious Adams, Oren Burks, Jace Sternberger, Josiah Deguara, and Amari Rodgers in 2021.
