Abner Uribe admits to a hacky sack injury ending his 2024 season

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Abner Uribe is well known across baseball for his involvement in a massive benches clearing brawl that involved Jose Siri of the Tampa Bay Rays.  A hefty six game suspension was initially handed out, but it was later reduced to four.

Following the incident, Uribe was optioned to Triple-A.  He never ended up serving his four game suspension as he sustained an injury to his meniscus and ended up having surgery to repair it.  Having previously undergone a meniscus repair a few years ago, on the other knee, he knew his season was over as the recovery from that procedure spans 6-9 months in pitchers.

What we didn’t know regarding Urbie’s torn meniscus, is how the injury happened.  This year, at Spring Training, he has revealed that he injured it playing hacky sack.

Hacky sack is a well known game in the baseball world as a way for players to get or stay loose.  Unfortunately for Uribe, when playing this game he twisted his knee and felt a pop in his meniscus.  Uribe has since said, “It’s a terrible game.  I can’t play anymore.”

This injury occurred around one month after the Milwaukee Brewers optioned him to Triple-A

The exact date when Uribe tore his meniscus was not revealed, but we can infer that it occurred sometime between May 26 and June 5.  He was optioned to Triple-A by the Brewers on May 1, his last minor league game was logged on May 25, and he was placed on the seven day injured list on June 5.  Surgery was performed on July 17 by Dr. ElAttrache.

What to expect from Abner Uribe in 2025?

2025 is going to be a big season for Uribe.  At 24 years old he has just one minor league option remaining, he has shown flashes of being a dominant back end of the bullpen force, and for better and for worse he has also been an emotional pitcher.

Hopefully he will serve his four game suspension immediately into the start of the season and end up playing a big role on the Brewers team this year.
