Aaron Rodgers’ retirement talk before Steelers-Packers draws blunt reaction from Jay Gruden

It’s about time for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers to share the field with his former team.

The Steelers are hosting the Green Bay Packers this Sunday at Acrisure Stadium, which isn’t the old stomping grounds of Rodgers, which would be Lambeau Field, but that shouldn’t keep people from checking out the matchup.

Rodgers and the Steelers are 4-2 through six games in the 2025 NFL season and are looking to get back on track after suffering a Thursday Night Football loss in Week 7 at the hands of Joe Flacco and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Former NFL head coach reacts to Aaron Rodgers’ retirement chatter with no filter

Rodgers is always going to attract attention regardless of what comes out of his mouth. Ahead of the Steelers’ game against the team he played for nearly 20 years in the NFL, Rodgers said that he plans to “retire a Packer and see what happens after that.”

That’s a quote everyone will run with on any given day, and it has since become a big talking point heading into the showdown between Pittsburgh and Green Bay.

For former Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden, however, he didn’t seem to love hearing the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player stirring up some nostalgia with a big game ahead.

“We know you’re gonna retire as a Packer,” Gruden during a recent episide of The Arena (h/t Jake Brockhoff of Steelers Depot) “This is the Steelers vs Packers, man. Lets go back there and kick their ass. We’ll retire some other time. But this week, that’s how I wish he would have come up with the approach. Tons of respect for Aaron, but I don’t think this was the time and the place to have this discussion… That’s retirement speech. You don’t do it on Friday before the game… He keeps giving ammunition to people just to keep shooting at him.”

There will always be different sides and opinions when it comes to most things related to Rodgers. The future Pro Football Hall of Famer can’t control that. What he can control, however, is his performance under center this Sunday versus Green Bay.
