Aaron Rodger signed a massive three year $150M dollar extension in March of 2022. Many thought that this would keep him in Green Bay for at least two more seasons. Rodgers’ cap hit for the 2022 and 2023 NFL seasons are manageable for a quarterback of his caliber. In 2022 he is set to count for just over $28M against the cap. In 2023 it’ll be just over $31M against the cap.
Relatively speaking, those are pretty reasonable numbers given the quarterback market over the last few years. However in 2024 we see his cap hit jump up to over $40M. That is when we could very well see a restructuring in his contract. That could be likely with Aaron Rodgers’ recent comments regarding his future in the NFL.
Aaron Rodgers Playing Beyond Just 2022?
In an interview with Barstool Sports, Aaron Rodgers had very telling comments regarding his future in the league. Big Cat (who is a well known die-hard Bears fan) repeatedly expressed his desire to get Aaron Rodgers to quit football. Or, at the very least, get him out of the NFC North. He expressly mentioned wanting this “so maybe his Bears would have a chance.” Big Cat mentioned Jeopardy or LIV Sports to make the offer seem more desirable. Aaron Rodgers response?
In three more years… Maybe four.
It was an unexpected answer, but one that Rodgers responded with immediately. He didn’t seem to be making a joke either. Now anything can happen, and we wouldn’t bank his entire future off this one interview, but it at least shows what he is thinking currently.
What would this mean for the Packers?
If Rodgers stuck around for 3-4 more years, they would likely end up trading Jordan Love and investing in a new QB for the future. Additionally they would likely need to add additional void years while extending Rodgers again to keep him financially happy. Rodgers is currently under contract through the 2026 season, but with his cap hit over $53M million in both 2025 and 2026, a contract restructure would be mandatory.
