Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has not had a good season for the New York Jets. Despite his claim that his last two season in New York have been “the two best years” of his life, the fact remains that, from the Jets perspective, the trade that landed him in New York has been an unmitigated disaster. He tore his Achilles four snaps into Week One in 2023 and has played far below his Hall of Fame standard in 2024.
This season, Rodgers has completed 63.0% of his passes for 3,623 yards, 24 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and an 89.1 passer rating. For his career, his 17-game average is a 65.1% completion percentage, 4,314 yards, 34 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and a 102.6 passer rating.
Due to his poor performance this season, his frayed relationship with Jets owner Woody Johnson, and New York’s need for a complete organizational overhaul, the four-time NFL MVP is not expected to be back in 2025.
NFL Salary Cap Expert Predicts Aaron Rodgers Will Retire in 2025
Rodgers himself has stated in recent weeks that he is not sure if he wants to play in the NFL in 2025. While he also said that there will be no darkness retreat to help him determine his future, the fact of the matter is that he has not committed to either retirement or playing again.
Of course, if he were to choose to play in 2025, it would not be for the Jets as they are believed to not want him back. And while other teams may be a good fit for the future Pro Football Hall of Famer, Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac does not believe he will give them a chance to bid for his services:
“Rodgers is due a non-guaranteed $37.5M in 2025, including a $35M option bonus that doesn’t need to be exercised until the beginning of the regular season. While his $23.5M cap figure next season isn’t overly restraining, it seems wildly unlikely that a Jets/Rodgers relationship will continue.
“The contract carries $49M of dead cap due to previously paid out bonuses. The Jets will have the choice to take that all on in 2025, designate him a Post June 1st release (splitting the cap into $14M for 2025/$35M for 2026), or simply waiting until after June 1st to process a release (or a potential Rodgers retirement).
“Prediction: The Jets outright release Aaron Rodgers in early March, taking on all $49M of dead cap in 2025 as they look to fully reset their roster & financials. Rodgers takes the spring to assess his options, ultimately opting for retirement after 20 seasons.”
On Sunday, Rodgers has the opportunity to throw his 500th career touchdown pass, which would make him just the fifth quarterback ever to reach that milestone. He has said, though, that failure to do so would not cause him to lose any sleep at night if he retires with 499.
As it stands heading into Week 18, which could be his last game ever, Rodgers ranks eighth all-time in passing yards (62,678), fifth in passing touchdowns (499), first in passer rating (102.6), and seventh in passes completed (5,346).
It has been a great career, there is no doubt about that. And it may be coming to an unceremonious end.
