The Green Bay Packers and New York Jets have yet to finalize an agreement on proper compensation for future Hall of Fame quarterback quarterback Aaron Rodgers. As the talks have dragged on, new reports indicate that two other teams, the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots, are also eyeing the four-time MVP. For the Packers, this is good news as it allows them to play hardball with New York. As for Aaron Rodgers, it really should not change anything. It is still the Jets or bust.
Aaron Rodgers Has Already Committed to Playing for the Jets in 2023

When Rodgers made his announcement on The Pat McAfee Show, he specifically mentioned that the Jets were the team that he wanted to play for in 2023. There was no discussion of the Packers exploring other options or trade partners. Frankly, if the 49ers or Patriots had been interested earlier, they would have made it known. If they had made it known, and it somehow escaped the listening ears of the media, whatever they were willing to offer in return was not enough for talks to gain any traction.
There is also the fact that Woody Johnson, Joe Douglas, and other Jets officials personally flew out to visit Rodgers in California to recruit him. Rodgers obviously bought into what they were pitching. Based on that, one has to believe Rodgers has no intention of playing for any other team. Not that he would have a choice. There is not a no-trade clause in his contract. However, he could always retire if he didn’t like any trade that came his way. That scenario is really the only wild card in this situation.
The New York Jets Have Put All Their Eggs in the Aaron Rodgers Basket

Everything that the Jets have done this season has pointed to their intention of having Aaron Rodgers under center in 2023. They signed Rodgers’ favorite wide receiver in Green Bay last season, Allen Lazard, to a four-year $44 million contract. Before that, they hired Nathaniel Hackett as their offensive coordinator. Rodgers won two MVP Awards with Hackett as his offensive coordinator in Green Bay.
While the two sides have not come to an agreement yet, there is very little doubt that the Jets need Aaron Rodgers just as much as the Packers need to move on from him. Jets head coach Robert Saleh has already said publicly that Zach Wilson will be New York’s backup quarterback next season. With that being set in stone, who else is there for them at starting quarterback? No one as good as Rodgers.
