The Packers offense has been a huge topic of discussion this season. The wide receivers especially have been talked about with the loss of Davante Adams to Las Vegas. At the end of week 2, the Packers receiving corp is starting to take shape. People are settling into their roles and favorite targets are beginning to emerge. After the week 2 win, Aaron Rodgers is a big fan of wide receiver Sammy Watkins.
Aaron Rodgers On Sammy Watkins
Watkins had a big game on Sunday. He only had 3 catches but racked up 93 yards. His biggest catch was a 55 yard catch that flipped the field and led to the field goal that all but sealed the game. He had a couple other nice timing catches where Rodgers trusted Watkins to be in the right spot. People forget that Watkins was a former top 5 pick. The talent has always been there and Rodgers sees it. After the game Rodgers said “Man we got a really special player”. He talked about how Watkins understands his role and fits perfectly into the Packers system. Aaron Rodgers is definitely a big fan of Sammy Watkins.
Can Watkins Stay Healthy?
This is the million dollar question. The issue that Watkins has had in the past is that he cannot stay on the field. Health is always tricky. Players can have issues for years and then all of a sudden stay healthy. There is one reason I am optimistic Watkins can stay healthy. In the past, he has been a focal point of the offense. On this team, he is a top receiver but not the focal point. Allen Lazard, Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon, Randall Cobb and Robert Tonyan are all targets that Rodgers loves not to mention rookies Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson. Watkins is not asked to carry the load and that may help with the injuries.
It is great to see Aaron Rodgers become a big fan of Sammy Watkins. If Watkins stays healthy, there is a chance that he ends the year as the Packers leading receiver.
