For weeks fans and analysts have been wondering why Aaron Rodgers has yet to be traded from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets. At the NFL’s annual owners’ meetings, Jets general manager Joe Douglas went as far as to say the Packers were negotiating in bad faith. Well, as it turns out, it was the Jets who reneged on the parameters the two teams had in place, and it was all because of something Aaron Rodgers himself said publicly.
Aaron Rodgers Saying that He Was 90% Retired Complicated Trade Talks
According to Yahoo sports writer Charles Robinson appeared on the “Wilde and Tausche” show today. In his interview, he described what exactly happened that has caused trade negotiations to go on for this long:
The parameters would possibly be a 2023 3rd and a 2024 1st. The #Jets had an understanding Rodgers would play for two years. And the 90% retired thing affected the negotiations.

Of course, the Packers would like to have an agreement based on the terms that were agreed upon before Rodgers’ comment on The Pat McAfee Show. As it turns out, the Jets’ 2023 first round pick was never in play.
Woody Johnson doesn't want to guarantee a 1st after what happens with the #Broncos and Russell Wilson, according to @CharlesRobinson. The #Jets owner wants to add conditionals to the deal.

So, the Packers are looking for one (1) second round pick this year, which could be number 42 or 43 overall. Additionally, the Packers wanted a guaranteed first round pick in 2024. It sounds like Russell Wilson’s struggles on the Denver Broncos are a sticking point for this pick. If the Jets struggle with Rodgers as their quarterback, they would get a high draft pick. The Broncos’ high pick this year is going to be used by Seattle, who acquired it in the trade.
The retirement talk also seems to have complicated matters. The Jets do not appear willing to deal any second round picks anymore. They do not have a third round pick this year, which would mean the highest pick they are willing to deal is a fourth.
That, of course, is not acceptable.
