5 Green Bay Packers Legends Named to Super Bowl All-Time 53 Man Roster

The Green Bay Packers have won 13 world championships including four Super Bowls. There are few franchises with as rich of a championship history as Green Bay. Now that Super Bowl LVII is in the books, fans and analysts are both looking forward to next season and discussing the legacies of all-time great players. The Kansas City Chiefs won their second Super Bowl in four years, and stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are already being talked about as all-time great Super Bowl players. In the spirit of ranking all-time great players in Super Bowl games, CBS Sports writer Bryan DeArdo compiled a 53-man roster with players he believes are the best performers in Super Bowl history. Five Green Bay Packers players made the list.

How Players Got Put on the 53-Man Super Bowl Roster

Per DeArdo, players were named to his 53-man roster using the following criteria:

    • Super Bowl MVPs
    • Multiple Super Bowl appearances an advantage
    • Did their performance significantly contribute to the success of their team?
    • Was their performance critical to the outcome of the game(s)?

As one might guess, that second bullet point disqualified any current Green Bay Packers players. However, there were several great players from the 1960’s and 1990’s who made the cut.

Green Bay Packers Legend #1: Right Tackle Forrest Gregg

Pro Football Hall of Famer Forrest Gregg is the only Green Bay Packers offensive player to be named to the Super Bowl’s All-Time 53-man roster. Of course, he won the first two Super Bowls with the Vince Lombardi Packers. In addition, he was a member of the Dallas Cowboys team that won Super Bowl VI.

Green Bay Packers Legend #2: Defensive End Reggie White

The signing of Reggie White in free agency was one of the key moments in the history of the Packers franchise. With White leading the defense, the Packers made back-to-back appearances in the Super Bowl in the late 1990’s. White set a then-record with three sacks in Super Bowl XXXI, which the Packers won 35-21 over the New England Patriots.

Green Bay Packers Legend #3: Cornerback Herb Adderley

Before Tom Brady became known for playing in ten Super Bowls, there was Herb Adderley who played in seven championship games, including four Super Bowls. Of course, he won the first two with the Green Bay Packers. He also appeared in back-to-back Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys in 1970-71.

Green Bay Packers Legend #4: Safety Willie Wood

Arguably the greatest undrafted free agent in team history, Willie Wood was an integral part of the first two Super Bowl winning teams. Like Gregg and Adderley, he also won numerous NFL Championships with the Packers before the Super Bowl became a thing.

Green Bay Packers Legend #5: Desmond Howard

Perhaps is it not a surprise that the only kick returner to win Super Bowl MVP in NFL history made this list. Desmond Howard earned that honor with four kick returns for 154 yards. This included a 99-yard kick return that he returned for a touchdown.
