During the 2021 season, the Milwaukee Brewers set a franchise record for the number of players used in a single season. That number was 61 different players. In 2022, the Brewers have called upon 51 different players.
Here we will take a look at three players that you may have forgotten were Brewers in 2022.
1) Alex Jackson – Catcher
Prior to opening day, the Brewers made two trades to address the catcher position. Most remember the trade for Victor Caratini. The Brewers made that trade due to Pedro Severino being suspended 80 games. In order to acquire Caratini the Crew had to part ways with catcher Brett Sullivan, which left the Nashville Sounds with just Mario Feliciano at catcher. Alex Jackson was acquired to fill that void in a trade with the Marlins.
At the end of April, Victor Caratini ended up on the COVID-IL. This resulted in Alex Jackson being promoted. He would go on to play in three games at the end of April/early May and two more games in early June. Overall he got 12 at-bats and collected three hits. Unfortunately, his 2022 season ultimately ended due to left wrist inflammation and a trip to the 60 day IL.
2) Connor Sadzeck – Pitcher
The Brewers have used a lot of different relievers this year in their bullpen. Connor Sadzeck was one of those players. The 30 year old was with the Brewers from July 13-25 in which he appeared in two games. His first game was a scoreless outing. In his second appearance he gave up three runs against the Rockies that included two home runs.
After the Rockies game, Sadzeck was designated for assignment and he elected free agency. He ended up signing a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals and is currently in their minor league system.
3) J.C. Mejia – Pitcher
Last off-season the Brewers traded with the Cleveland Guardians for J.C. Mejia. He had just made his MLB debut in 2021 and he had some advanced metrics to be excited about. Unfortunately in May he was suspended 80 games after testing positive for a banned substance. The suspension came shortly after his first two appearances with the Brew Crew.
Mejia’s two games with the Brewers were not good. In 2.1 innings pitched he allowed six earned runs. He was responsible for five earned runs against the Reds on May 11 when the Brewers lost the game that Christian Yelich hit for the cycle in. He has been pitching well in Triple-A this year, so perhaps he will get another shot at the major league level in 2022.
