The calendar has officially flipped to 2022. With the new year, there comes new year’s resolutions or goals. In this article, we will take a look at three goals the Milwaukee Brewers should look to accomplish in 2022.
1) Win the National League Central
Since re-joining the National League in 1998, the Brewers have been division champs three times. 2011 marked their first NL Central title, 2018 their second, and most recently 2021. Should the Crew manage to win their fourth division championship in 2022, that would mean that they were division three out of the last five years.
In years past, division winners have been rewarded by not having to play in the one game wild card to continue on in the post-season. The Brewers 2019 post-season ended in heart breaking fashion when they lost to the eventual World Series Champion Washington Nationals in that game. With the MLB currently in a lockout, the play-off structure may change, but odds are it would be very beneficial to have the best record in the NL Central.
2) Have back-to-back Cy Young Award Winners
In 2021, Corbin Burnes was the Brewers first Cy Young since Pete Vuckovich in 1982. Throughout the history of the organization, only three players have managed to win the prestigious award. The last player not mentioned to win Cy Young was Rollie Fingers. He won the award in 1981.
If history can manage to repeat itself, a Brewers pitcher will win Cy Young in 2022. Fingers and Vuckovich won the award in back to back season in 1981 and 1982, so the biggest question for 2022 is who would win? Aside from Burnes being a repeat winner, Brandon Woodruff and Freddy Peralta are talented enough to make a run at winning Cy Young.
3) Win The World Series
The Brewers are one of six teams yet to win a World Series. Their only appearance came in 1982 when they lost in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals. However, under David Stearns they have made the post-season each of the past four seasons and finished a game short of making it to baseball biggest stage in 2018.
Currently, the Brewers have a young core intact and are in the midst of a contention window. They are expected to be competitive for quite a while yet and in baseball all you need is a chance. Hopefully 2022 will be that year!
